Well, today is Thanksgiving. Doesn't much feel like Thanksgiving here, with the kids having just left for school. Yes, that's right; our U.S.-Embassy-sponsored international school does not observe Thanksgiving. Go figure. So, it's business as usual for the kids. The Embassy, however, is closed today, so Eli is home, and the upside of having the kids at school is that we will have a kid-free house in which to prepare our Thanksgiving meal. It still feels strange to me, though. Not to mention that we are not surrounded by our families, which always has been the case on Thanksgiving. For some reason, we've hosted Thanksgiving for many of the years that we've been married, with one or both sides of the family joining us for the occasion. I love cooking Thanksgiving dinner! It's one of my favorite holidays of the year.
I think that this may be one of the harder holidays for folks who work in the Foreign Service. The break isn't long enough for a trip back home, and most people can't afford to have their families come over for such a short visit. And so, as frequently happens in Embassies, families gather together and spend the holiday together. Many small gatherings will occur within the Embassy community today; we are having another family over late this afternoon to share our Thanksgiving meal, and to jointly give thanks for all of the blessings in our lives. We will all miss being with our real families, though, to say the least.
