At the risk of being a bit crude, I have decided to share this funny story with my blog readers. Hoping that it might just bring you a smile or two on this last Monday of November!
Our 9-year old son has autism. He's the most marvelous boy, but he needs a lot of help with lots of things. We were so proud of him two years ago when he learned to use the potty; his Daddy took a week off after Christmas to do an intensive potty-training program with him, and it worked! It's been great for him, and for us.
Out of necessity, however, we recently taught him how to "tinkle" outside. You see, we were on a trip to Romania, and we went on an all-day horse and cart ride out into the woods, and there were no bathrooms. And so, we all used nature, and of course, Graham had to follow suit. Truth be told, every young man has to learn this art sooner or later, right? To his credit, Graham caught right on.
Fast forward three months. After we got our Christmas tree up last night, we were hanging ornaments, listening to Christmas music and otherwise enjoying the first festivities of the season. At one point, though, I noticed that Graham was standing facing the tree -- ah-hem -- with his pants down. He had assumed the position. I shrieked and promptly pulled him away from the tree and pulled his pants up and exclaimed "what in world were you doing, Graham," at which point someone in the room who knows him well said "well, of course, he was 'going' in the bushes." And so, it seems, our sweet little Graham thought that we had put a bush up in our living room just for his pottying convenience. We all had a huge chuckle, and then tried to explain to Graham that this was a Christmas tree, not a bush for tinkling.
Ah, the joys of parenthood!! Never a dull moment.
