We are having a wonderful summer. Somehow, the pace seems much slower here than in Nashville, and our days are full of sleeping late, big breakfasts, swimming, playing outside with neighbors and the new kitty, taking walks, and just plain hanging out. It has been really nice for our family to slow down a bit and not be so stressed by commitments (even if the commitment is just being at swim practice at 8:00 each morning).
One thing we've realized about the way that Serbs do their terrific fruits and vegetables here (i.e. eating only what is in season --everything is organic and grown locally), is that you only have a short window during which most of the seasonal fruits are available. So, for instance, those incredible strawberries and cherries I mentioned a few posts ago, are GONE! No more cherries. Bummer. However, we now have peaches, other berries, plums and the usual apples, bananas, etc. Not having much knowledge about when particular fruits and veggies are really in season (since most are available year-round in the US), I had a conversation about this with my Serbian language teacher yesterday, and she said that grapes and corn are right around the corner, and that they both are to die for. In the meantime, we'll just keep eating lots of tomatoes, zucchini and peppers (called paprika here), and of course, plenty of the most wonderful bread in the world!!!
Talk to you all soon.
Erin
